Black Swan Tiara – New Options

Introducing a new color and size for the Black Swan Tiara!

I had wanted a gray tone for the original tiara, but the wire color wasn’t available until just recently.  Since January, I have also been crafting custom Small Organic Tiaras from the buyer’s selection of wire and crystal colors. It is just under 2 inches high at the center and feature 22 crystals.  A scaled-down option for Black Swan seemed like another natural fit. Choices!

The new hematite gray wire, heliotrope Swarovski crystals, and jet hematite Swarovski crystals convey an excellent version of the crown worn in the film, Black Swan.

Here is the original, larger Black Swan Tiara in the bronzey-brown gunmetal color. This design stands about 2.5 inches high at the center and includes 32 crystals.

My original design is made of gunmetal art wire, smoked topaz Swarovski crystals, and medium vitrail Swarovski crystals.

So many options now!  Which do you prefer?

Extra Super Fancy 50th Birthday Tiara

If anyone is a candidate for a very special tiara, it’s my aunt Terri.  She’s a joyful, one-of-a-kind woman who inspires fun everywhere she goes.  To celebrate her 50th birthday, my sisters, cousins, and I (T’s nieces and nephews) went in on a custom tiara just for her. The tiara was presented to her at the first of two birthday parties that were happening the weekend of the Big 5-0.  She loved it so much she wore it at the parties, around the house, to yoga, and just about everywhere else.

14 karat gold-fill for her golden birthday and amethyst crystals for her February birthstone were the base for the crown, with a selection of coordinating crystals and pearls to round out the rich, bold texture.

The star shaped crystals are a nod to Terri’s shining personality.

Personally, I looooved working with the gold-fill in this way.  It’s a smooth, pliable metal that just wants to do what I tell it.  Every twist and turn forms so nicely in my hands.  I love working with this many adornments, too.  There’s a certain type of patience I have to call upon to get started, keep going, and finally know when to say when going this over-the-top with the bling.  Almost the whole way through, it looks like too much, but at some point, I can see the last couple of spots for glitz and it’s soon balanced and complete. In the case of this sort of tiara, less is not more.  But it seems there’s a right way to “make more is more” work.

Tiara and a tutu!

This is Terri, seeing us off at the airport.  She really does make every moment fun!

White Swan Tiara

The Black Swan Tiara has been a tremendous hit, so crafting her counterpart made sense.  Introducing the White Swan Tiara

I realize that in the ballet as well as the film the White Swan wears a feathered headpiece that lays more downward and around her head.  Making something like that out of wire seemed like a good way to get some eyes poked out so I went with my design but with lighter, silvery metal.  Soon I’ll add crystals to one, too!

Drag Queen Pageant Crown

As a maker of crowns, I’ve often dreamed about one actually getting to be a part of a crowning ceremony.  Making them for weddings, special events, or just for fun is wonderful, but having one of my creations be the thing that says “You Are The Winner!” is really thrilling.

Lucky for me, an organizer of a drag queen pageant found my Black Swan Tiara on Etsy, loved it enough to inquire, and went so far as to imagine a larger, bolder version for his event.  I love when people are inspired to spin one of my creations into their own vision.  He wanted a mix of the gunmetal wire and bare copper as well as a change to clear crystals and some magnificent black pearls.  The pearls came in tiny or huge and, to my delight, he chose the huge.  I also wove it onto a plain metal headband so it could be easily placed on the head of the winner.

And the winner is…

Eva Styles!!!

Wild Tiara Found a Home

This Wild Tiara was my third ever made, and sort of my favorite.  Totally my favorite.  I’ve had a couple of favorites over the years, but I connected the most with this special, one-of-a-kind crown.  I didn’t design it, I just started and kept going until I thought it looked right.  Sterling silver tendrils hand-twisted with pearls, crystals, and glass beads popping where ever I chose, magically, it looked like this in my head before I even started.  That rarely happens and I was actually in awe of the end result.  Beautiful and totally unique!  I thought we’d be together forever.

Well, this dame found her match this weekend.   I was vending my wares at a holiday festival when a bright-eyed, spunky red-headed woman put it on and didn’t take it off or stop grinning while her new husband slowly, but joyfully bought it for his special lady.  She asked her man if he could stand her in it every day–she would be fine with wearing it constantly, but would he.  He seemed to get it.  The manner in which this obviously unique person and the tiara connected was so organic and fun, just like the making of it.  It looked great on her and fit without needing bobby pins.  Perfection.

Black Swan Tiara

I mean it when I say that I love making custom tiaras.  A shopper approached me on Etsy, saying she loved my tiaras and was looking for one made of darker metal and a lower price.  For Halloween, she was planning to dress up as the signature image of Natalie Portman’s character in the new film Black Swan, a film I’ve been looking forward to and costume idea I could totally get behind.  I sourced some art wire in gunmetal tone, made a few sketches, sent her an estimate and got to work.  My result is not an exact replica, but I feel like it captures the look while still being my style.

Update: I now have this and two similar options for sale in my Etsy shop…
